Fire Hydrant and Water Main Valve Inspections and Maintenance

Isolation Valve Print E-mail
Isolation Valve

The isolation valve is usually a gate valve the controls the supply of water to the fire hydrant.  In order to service or replace a fire hydrant, it is necessary to use the isolation valve to close off the water that leads to the fire hydrant.  See our Unidirectional Flushing tutorial to understand the basics of water distribution system components.

If the isolation valve does not exist or it is not accessible (i.e. buried or damaged), a partial or entire site shut down will be required in order to service the fire hydrant.  A shut down can be an inconvenience, but would be necessary in such conditions.
