The lower stem is a large, solid metal rod that is connected to the upper stem and the lower mechanism of the hydrant. The length of these stems vary with the make and depth of the fire hydrant. Some typical problems of lower stems are that they are too long which can create a water hammer or they are too short which can cause damage to the cone and incomplete the opening of the fire hydrant main valve. Crooked or rusted lower stems can cause improper operation of the fire hydrant, drip valve for self drainage, and main valve operation.
