Fire Hydrant and Water Main Valve Inspections and Maintenance

Safety Flange Print E-mail

The safety flange is an important part of the exterior of the fire hydrant because it's function is to "break away" when hit by accident.  All hydrants are composed of some fairly expensive parts, especially the hydrant body and the safety flange is very important in reducing damage.

The safety flange is either a ring or segmented ring of metal.  The safety flange in combination with a safety coupling helps prevent major damage to the internal components if the fire hydrant is struck by a vehicle, snow plow, etc.  If the fire hydrant is without a safety flange, there is the possibility of damaging the main valve of the fire hydrant and causing massive water release.  In a situation such as this, it is good to know where the isolation valve of the hydrant is located in order to shut the water in good time, otherwise an entire site shut down may be required.

It is important that the elevation of the fire hydrant is correct.  In order for a fire hydrant flange to be effective, it cannot be too high or too low.

Please contact us today as our qualified technicians would be more than happy to inspect your fire hydrants to determine if they meet the specifications for flange protection.

In Ottawa, snow banks can build up quite high and if a fire hydrant marker is not present, snow plows may not be aware of the hydrant and could knock it off the barrel pipe quite easily. To help prevent this from happening we supply and install fire hydrant markers.

If any of your hydrants do not have any markers, please contact us and we'll send you a quick quote to install one.
